Will Shipley’s Journey to the Eagles Fueled by Brotherly Rivalries and Backyard Workouts

The competitive spirit between brothers James and Will Shipley has always been boundless, their sibling rivalry manifesting in everything from video games to sports. This energetic dynamic was particularly palpable last week as Will recounted their childhood clashes during the Eagles rookie camp.

Opposing Coach Calls Shipley 'Swiss Army Knife'

Will, the younger by two years, vividly remembered a time when a loss in a FIFA game against James led to an impromptu weaponization of a pull-up bar. Though the attack missed its intended target, it left a mark on their wall and symbolized the intensity of their competitive nature. Physical basketball games often concluded with James pinning Will down, a testament to their fierce but brotherly battles.

This competitive drive extended beyond household skirmishes to academic and athletic excellence. Both Shipley brothers have a history of high achievement, being state champions in football, lacrosse, and track while attending Weddington High School in Matthews, North Carolina. Their scholarly efforts were equally impressive, with Will completing his Clemson degree in just three years with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Now, both brothers find themselves in Philadelphia, though their paths have diverged. James, at 23, has recently concluded a remarkable lacrosse career at Penn, while 21-year-old Will embarks on a promising NFL journey with the Eagles, who drafted him in the fourth round. Their shared competitive ethos appears to be a driving force in Will’s leap to professional football.

Reflecting on their past, James highlighted the influence of their spirited rivalry on their current mindset, emphasizing a commitment to excellence in every endeavor. This sentiment is echoed by their former football coach, Andy Capone, who observed their close bond and mutual support from an early age.

Capone, who witnessed Will’s meteoric rise in high school football, believes Will’s competitive nature and exceptional talent make him a standout addition to the NFL. Despite the pandemic cutting Will’s high school career short, Capone has continued to follow both brothers’ progress, proud of their achievements and the men they’ve become.

Amid the challenges of the pandemic, the brothers converted an old shed into a gym, dubbed the ‘Shred Shed,’ where they continued their athletic training and strengthened their bond. Their journey from a homemade gym to professional arenas encapsulates their dedication and mutual support.

As Will settles into his new role with the Eagles, the proximity to James in Philadelphia reminds him of the invaluable support and inspiration his brother has been throughout their lives. The once fierce siblings now stand united, ready to tackle their futures with a bond forged through competition, love, and perseverance.
