Rangers Captain Wins Prestigious Award

Jacob Trouba has been awarded the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award.

New York Rangers defenseman and captain Jacob Trouba has been awarded the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award for the 2023-24 season.

This high honor is given to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season and who plays a leading role in his community growing the game of hockey.

“Well, one of the first things I did when I was named captain was read your book, which I recommend everybody read, and a guy that’s so accomplished,” Trouba said to Messier on ESPN’s studio show “The Point.” “One thing that stuck with me is that you titled the book ‘No One Wins Alone.’ And I think that says a lot about how you lead, and you lean on people around you and people help you. It’s a lot of your everyday, how you treat people, how you live your life, the example you set, obviously, on and off the ice. A lot goes into it but there’s also a lot of people who help you along the way, and you lean on those people, and leadership’s a group effort.”

In 69 games this season, the 30-year-old had three goals, 19 assists and 22 points while playing 21:14 minutes pergame.

His impact goes far beyond just the stats though. Trouba has made a significant impact in the community since arriving in New York back in 2019.

As part of his community service work, Trouba is involved with both the Rangers Youth Hockey Camp and The Garden of Dreams Foundation. This season he was able to help raise $100,000 for The Garden of Dreams Foundation.

Also, Trouba and his wife Dr. Kelly Tyson-Trouba, founded The Trouba Creative Expressions Arts Program, which offers art services to adults with epilepsy and seizures through the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York.
