The Avengers' Loki and Iron Man

Summary

  • Tom Hiddleston acknowledges the possibility of Loki bringing back Iron Man due to his ability to time-slip, opening up interesting moves for the character.
  • Rumors of Robert Downey Jr.’s return have been circulating, with multiple reports hinting at Marvel Studios potentially recruiting the actor back to the MCU.
  • While Downey hasn’t fully closed the door on returning, his desire to explore other projects and potentially earn an Academy Award may influence his decision. However, a brief cameo appearance is still possible, especially with Loki’s time-slip abilities.

After the events of Loki season 2, Tom Hiddleston addresses the possibility that his Marvel Cinematic Universe character brings back Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. The God of Mischief has officially become the God of Stories, giving him a unique position in the evolving franchise. While it’s unclear if and when Loki will be back in the MCU, his ability to time slip is a game-changing skill that can open a vast array of possibilities for the universe moving forward.

Marvel Studios just made its best anti-villain its most important hero in the Loki season 2 finale as he sacrifices himself to keep the multiverse from collapsing. Before that, however, the Asgardian Prince debuted a brand new power set, time-slipping, allowing him to travel through various times and spaces. Given this, he can technically go back to a point in the history of the MCU where Tony Stark is still alive and save him. When asked in The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon if this is in the cards, Hiddleston has an interesting answer. Read it below:

Fallon: “Since Loki knows how to time-slip now, can he go find someone like Tony Stark, a.k.a Iron Man?”

Hiddleston: “This guy. This is investigative journalism right here! I mean… time-slipping technically gives Loki some interesting moves he can make. I suppose, yeah, he can move from past, present, future. I know that I can time-slip. I don’t know that other characters can time-slip.”

Iron Man MCU Return Rumors Explained

Iron Man's snap in Avengers Endgame

Rumors of Robert Downey Jr.’s return have long been swirling around. Initially, it was promulgated by fans who aren’t exactly thrilled with the death of Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame. As time went by, however, several reports started hinting that Marvel Studios may actually be working on recruiting the actor back to the MCU. Couple that with the birth of the Marvel Multiverse and there are several ways to bring the character back without cheapening his sacrifice. Kevin Feige has been quite coy when recently asked about the matter, but he has always been very dodgy when it comes to queries about the future of the MCU.

Downey never really fully closed his doors about the possibility of returning to the MCU despite his character’s demise. That being said, he has been very vocal about wanting to venture out and do other things, and understandably so, considering that he devoted more than a decade of his life brilliantly playing the genius billionaire Avenger. His success playing Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which may earn him his first Academy Award, could ultimately dissuade him from reprising his most iconic role. That being said, given how the role changed the trajectory of his career, not to mention his great relationship with people at Marvel Studios, he may not be fully opposed to at least a cameo.

Hiddleston did warn that while Loki can time slip, he is unsure if other characters in the MCU also can. Regardless, however, this still paves the way for Downey’s Iron Man to return, even just for a brief appearance. Assuming that ends up being the case, there’s something fascinating about bringing an essentially redeemed Loki after Loki season 2 face to face with Iron Man.
