The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott Gimple says season 12 of the long-running zombie franchise is still on the table after the currently-airing spinoffs. The flagship series ended in 2022, making way for multiple spinoffs featuring major characters from the original show. So far, Dead City starring Maggie and Negan, as well as Daryl Dixon starring Daryl, have begun their multi-season runs.
Speaking at New York Comic Con (via ComicBook.com), Gimple revealed that, despite the Walking Dead series finale already airing, he would be open to bringing the main series back once the spinoffs are over. He also discussed the possibility of all the new spinoffs – including the upcoming Rick and Michonne show The Ones Who Live – coming together for a crossover event. Check out what Gimple had to say below:
[A crossover] isn’t specifically planned. It would be good, though, to see. The dream would be that these shows somehow converge in some way, narratively.
I’m not against [The Walking Dead season 12].
Why The Walking Dead Season 12 Would Be The Perfect Ending For The Franchise
Gimple’s comments indicate that, while a grand finale for the franchise isn’t plotted out, the possibility still exists. This means everything from Dead City‘s New York-based story to the worldwide journey expanding in Daryl Dixon season 2 could end up having core repercussions for the entire franchise. This can be built upon by The Ones Who Live, whose focus on the massive CRM will open up an entire new world for the series.
Prior to the development of spinoffs, The Walking Dead seasons 12 through 15 were planned, which would have seen Daryl leave the show while Maggie and Negan became the main characters.
Despite being on their own journeys, the main characters of each spinoff still consider each other family. Seeing them reunite in a revival of the original series would bring a satisfying conclusion to their adventures in different parts of the world. It could also be used as a vehicle to bring the franchise to a memorable stopping point, as it would feature characters audiences had grown to love for many years across different shows.
While it’s unclear how everyone could converge in the future, Gimple seems optimistic The Walking Dead season 12 could happen at some future point. If it does, then it could result in multiple reunions for spinoff characters, as well as characters not featured in the currently-airing lineup. A grand finale for the franchise would make the most sense if the spinoffs wind up coming to the same conclusive point.
