Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us, has given fans a glimpse into what to expect from season two of the HBO series. Production is slated to kick off in early 2024, and Druckmann has teased that it will include previously discarded content from The Last of Us Part II video game. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he mentioned that “at least one element” from a cut level of the game will be integrated into the series. However, he also emphasized that changes might occur during production to ensure the best fit for the series.
“As a tease, I will say there is at least one element from a cut level that is planned [for] the show. I say that with the caveat that we haven’t started filming the show yet and all things are subject to change based on what we ultimately feel will be best for the show.” Druckmann said. “The Lost Levels are very much focused on offering a sneak peek into The Last of Us Part II’s original development and deepen fans’ appreciation for the studio’s creative work. While the TV show has diverged from the original works to suit the medium and likely will again, these levels are not meant to be indicative of work on the HBO show, which is separate from Part II Remastered’s development.”
The series, based on the critically acclaimed video game, offers a narrative set in a post-apocalyptic world. It follows the journey of Joel, a hardened survivor, who undertakes the responsibility of escorting Ellie, a young teenager, through the harsh and dangerous remnants of society. The show delves into their evolving relationship, as they face unimaginable hardships and encounter merciless adversaries while traversing the desolate landscapes of post-pandemic America.
