Fear the Walking Dead showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian B. Goldberg explain how Strand and Madison’s final scene was almost very different.

Fear The Walking Dead Boss Breaks His Silence On That Controversial Strand Scene

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Fear the Walking Dead series finale!

  • Fear the Walking Dead showrunners considered an alternate ending where Victor Strand had an interaction with Madison and Alicia.
  • However, they ultimately decided on a more poetic and symbolic ending, where Strand sees Madison and Alicia in his rearview mirror, knowing they’re alive and fulfilling Madison’s dream of being with her daughter.
  • The showrunners believe this ending felt true to the characters and allowed for a poignant moment between Strand and Madison.

Fear the Walking Dead showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian B. Goldberg have revealed an alternate final scene between Victor Strand and Madison in the series finale. In the show’s last episode, Madison and Alicia decide to let the core group think they’re dead while they embark on a journey to LA. However, they do leave bluebonnets for Strand and show themselves in his side-view mirror, letting him know they’re still alive.

Sitting down with Screen Rant, Chambliss and Goldberg revealed an alternate Fear the Walking Dead ending for Strand and Madison’s final encounter. Chambliss explained one idea was to have the duo speak one last time, which was scrapped for a more symbolic ending between them. Check out what Chambliss had to say below:

It’s funny, it was always just Strand, we did play around with some version where Strand actually had an interaction with Madison and Alicia. But to us, the moment just felt more poetic, if it played as really a grace note, and he knew that his dream for Madison was coming true that she was going to get to have this time with her daughter and kind of allow it to be just their moment. That’s what felt kind of true to us, so that’s the story behind that.

Why Strand & Madison Had The Perfect Fear The Walking Dead Ending

Madison and Strand have known each other since the start of the zombie apocalypse, becoming allies despite Strand’s suspicious behavior in the early seasons. Although the duo were separated following Madison’s perceived death in season 4, their reunion in season 8 brought them together as they tried to stop Troy from destroying PADRE. Because of their close relationship, it makes sense she would give him closure by revealing she was still alive.

While the rest of Fear the Walking Dead‘s characters believe the Clark family is dead, Madison ultimately decides to keep them in the dark, so she can go with her daughter to Los Angeles. Strand’s own family means he’ll have goals of his own, making him the safest survivor to learn the truth about the mother-daughter duo. The pair don’t want anyone chasing after them, but still want to make sure their legacy is recognized by someone they were once close to.

This is further emphasized by Strand finding the bluebonnet in his truck, a hopeful symbol from Madison indicating her positive mindset for the future. It delivers a symbolic ending for both characters, who are heading off with their families to find new places to thrive and help others. Even though Fear the Walking Dead marks the end of their stories, it also keeps the door open for the many adventures they will embark upon separately in unseen futures.
