Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 2 has found its director. Production of Strange New Worlds season 3 is now in full swing in Toronto. Originally, Strange New Worlds season 3 was supposed to start filming in May, but it was halted by the combined Writer’s Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. With film and TV productions fully back, Strange New Worlds is now shooting the season 3 premiere, but the show is also prepping for episode 302.
On Instagram, Jordan Canning (@jjhcanning) shared a photo announcing she is the director of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 2. Canning’s post includes her caption, “So happy to be back on the Starship…” and it was liked by producing director Chris Fisher as well as Jess Bush, who plays Nurse Christine Chapel. Jordan Canning previously directed Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, “Charades.” A Vulcan comedy of manners, “Charades” saw Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) turn fully human, which jeopardizes his ritual engagement dinner with his fiancée, T’Pring (Gia Sandhu). Along with an overly emotional Spock, “Charades” featured comedic turns from Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the USS Enterprise crew, but it also ended with Spock and T’Pring’s breakup so that the Science Officer could start a hot new romance with Nurse Christine Chapel. Canning and Peck discussed “Charades” on The 7th Rule podcast hosted by Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk just hours before the SAG-AFTRA strike began in July. Watch the video below:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds chooses directors and assigns them genre-specific episodes based on their creative talents and strengths. Given the tremendous job by Jordan Canning directing Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, it could mean Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 2 is a comedy episode, another Vulcan-centric episode, or both. Given Strange New Worlds season 3’s premiere is expected to be an action-packed conclusion to the season 2 finale’s Gorn cliffhanger, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may follow up with a humorous episode as a palate cleanser. If that’s the case, Jordan Canning has proven to be an ideal director for that job.
