Picard Season 3 Showrunner Terry Matalas Confirms No Star Trek: Legacy In Development

Paramount hasn’t held talks about making Star Trek: Legacy

Prior to Star Trek: Picard sweeping the Saturn Awards, TrekMovie interviewed Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas on the red carpet and asked about the status of Star Trek: Legacy. Matalas reiterated that there is no movement or discussions with Paramount about making a Star Trek: Legacy spinoff. Read his quote below:

First, there’s nothing to say [about Legacy ], I wish there was – but yeah, there’s a there’s quite a few storylines that we talked about from the beginning about where that would go. And it’s just such a rich opportunity… There’s not [been discussions with Paramount about making Star Trek: Legacy]. They have Star Trek that they are making and they only have so much money and streaming space. There’s currently not, but we’re looking forward to whatever the Star Trek universe brings… and never say never.

Star Trek on Paramount+ has two projects currently shooting and one in development. Lensing now in Toronto are Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 and Star Trek: Section 31, the first made-for-streaming on Paramount+ movie starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh. Meanwhile, a new young adult-themed TV series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is in development with Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau as co-showrunners. Unfortunately, the common belief seems to be there won’t be new Star Trek developed until these shows and movie are completed.

Star Trek fans online continue to advocate for Star Trek: Legacy, which is supported by Picard cast members like Todd Stashwick, Michelle Hurd, and Jeri Ryan.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ended With Lots Of Legacy Story Opportunities

Terry Matalas is open to a Star Trek movie, but a Legacy series is ideal

Especially frustrating for Terry Matalas and Star Trek: Picard season 3’s fans is the myriad story and character possibilities currently left on the table with no Star Trek: Legacy being madePicard season 3 ended with the potential to continue the stories of the USS Enterprise-G crew, have Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members appear, and bring back fan favorites like Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), who died during Picard season 3. Matalas explained what “Legacy” means to TrekMovie:

I call it “ Legacy” mostly because it was in the 25th century. Like the idea of people from Deep Space Nine coming in, and Raffi and Worf, and Raffi and Worf’s son Alexander. I could sit and – let’s get a dry-erase board and break it right now. There are just so many stories from that era.

Terry Matalas also addressed the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy becoming a movie like Star Trek: Section 31, which was also originally planned to be a TV series before it was shifted into a feature film. But Matalas believes that a series suits the potential of Star Trek: Legacy best:

Look, anything is possible. We certainly wouldn’t be “Oh no, we aren’t going to do a movie.” For me, I would just need this crew, I would need this cast, and as long as that was a possibility, we would figure something out, yeah. A series is obviously ideal because there’s so many stories to tell. And the 25th century in general in Star Trek is such a rich thing.

As time passes, the possibility that Star Trek: Legacy can happen is jeopardized by the cast and crew, including Terry Matalas, potentially be moving on to new film and TV work. Thankfully, Star Trek: Picard season 3’s cast and crew have continually reaffirmed their desire to make Star Trek: Legacy. Hopefully, everyone’s timing and circumstances will still work out if Star Trek: Legacy does one day get a green light from Paramount.
