Why Captain Seven Of Nine Needs To Continue
Captain Seven of Nine needs to continue in order to fulfill the promise made by Star Trek: Picard season 3, but also to bring Seven of Nine’s story full circle. Both Seven and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) suffered deep psychological trauma inflicted by the Borg, but Picard served as living proof that one could heal from the trauma of assimilation into the Collective, and go on to live a rewarding life helping others in Starfleet. Seven of Nine becoming a fellow Captain of the Enterprise honors Picard’s role in Seven’s healing journey, and seeing Seven’s adventures as captain would show that healing is a continual, ongoing process.
More practically, Star Trek: Picard season 3 proved that legacy characters and new characters can unite for great stories that satisfy both old and new fans. Star Trek: Legacy, as a Picard spinoff taking place in the early 25th century, could feasibly catch up with characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, with actors being able to reprise their roles from those shows in live action without the need for de-aging technology. Legacy could provide a vehicle for so many Star Trek characters of the 80s and 90s to receive the Star Trek: Picard treatment, and there’s no better captain for that vehicle than Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine.
