Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh gives a small but exciting update about Star Trek: Section 31, which is “definitely” prepping in Toronto. Yeoh will return as her anti-heroine, Emperor Philippa Georgiou, to headline Section 31, the first made exclusively for streaming on Paramount+ Star Trek movie event. Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman told New York Comic Con in October that Yeoh used the Hollywood clout she gained from her Best Actress Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once to ensure Section 31 goes forward.
In an interview with Collider to promote her upcoming Netflix series The Brothers Sun, Michelle Yeoh was asked about Star Trek: Section 31. While tight-lipped with details, as a Section 31 agent would be, Yeoh assures fans the Star Trek movie is “going full steam ahead.” Check out her quote below:
“I just came back from Toronto, and what does that tell you? We are definitely prepping. We are definitely going full steam ahead. And thank you. Section 31 is very special to me, and I’m so happy we’re doing it.”
TrekMovie.com reports Star Trek: Section 31 will film in Toronto concurrently with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 from January 29 to March 13.
Section 31 Is A Perfect Way For A Missing Star Trek: Picard Character To Return
Star Trek: Section 31 could see Emperor Georgiou recruit other Star Trek characters into the black ops agency, including Star Trek: Picard’s Soji.
What Section 31 Means For Star Trek On Paramount+
Section 31 could be the first in a new wave of Star Trek movies.
Star Trek: Section 31 was announced in April to be the first of a series of made-for-Paramount+ Star Trek movies made exclusively for the streaming service. The original intention was to release a new Star Trek film on Paramount+ every 2 years, but this was before the double WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which could have altered Star Trek on Paramount+’s future plans. Regardless, thanks to Michelle Yeoh’s love of Star Trek and dedication to starring in Section 31, her spy adventure film will go forward, and its success will likely determine whether a sequel, a spinoff series, or any more Star Trek movies on Paramount+ will follow.
Section 31‘s quality and reception will also be an indicator of whether the Star Trek franchise’s decision to spin off from the soon-to-be-ending Star Trek: Discovery is a wise move, as opposed to heeding the daily fan demand online for Star Trek: Picard season 3 to get a spinoff about the USS Enterprise-G set in the 25th century. The upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series is also believed to spin off from Discovery. However, in Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31 has a bankable global star who adores the franchise and will play Emperor Georgiou for the first time since she left Star Trek: Discovery season 3 in December 2020. Betting against Emperor Georgiou has never paid off for anyone.
