Patrick Stewart helped Star Trek: Discovery‘s Doug Jones understand what it means to be a part of the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which is also its final season, premieres Thursday, April 4, on Paramount+. Today, Jones is a Star Trek veteran who is beloved by fans, but he was just starting out as the Kelpien Commander Saru on Star Trek: Discovery when Doug encountered Patrick Stewart at the Academy Awards in 2018.
As reported by TrekMovie, Doug Jones joined his Star Trek: Discovery cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, Anthony Rapp, Mary Chieffo, and Eve Harlow, for a panel at Star Trek: The Cruise VII. Reminiscing on the negative reception Star Trek: Discovery season 1 received from some longtime Trekkers, Doug Jones told a story of meeting Patrick Stewart at the 2018 Oscars red carpet, and what Stewart told him after learning Jones was now part of Star Trek. Read Doug Jones’ quote below:
For me, I think Sir Patrick Stewart said it best when I met him at the Oscars. I don’t want to boast or anything. It was the Oscars [in] early 2018, and we had just finished filming Season 1 of Discovery . And he’s right behind me in the red carpet line… So I was standing in line with Miss Laurie, and she’s like [whispers] “That’s Patrick Stewart!” So I turn to him, “Sir, Mister Patrick, Mister Stewart, uh, I’m Doug Jones and I’m in The Shape of Water. That’s why I am here, but we have a connection. I’m actually also in the new Star Trek series Discovery .” All he said to me was [does Stewart voice], “Oh. I hope you know what you’re in for.” Yes, now I do and I love every minute of it.
Patrick Stewart’s Admiral Jean-Luc Picard was mentioned for the first time on Star Trek: Discovery in season 3, episode 7 – “Unification III”.

However, Doug Jones has alluded to a “dignified change” for Saru in terms of the trajectory of his Starfleet career. Doug Jones says he is “very pleased” with what comes next for Saru and T’Rina.
Meanwhile, Saru’s relationship with President T’Rina (Tara Rosling) will also progress in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.
