Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ Anson Mount explains how Captain Christopher Pike got that remarkable kitchen in his quarters aboard the USS Enterprise. Strange New Worlds season 3 production is now in full swing, with filming currently taking place on Strange New Worlds season 3’s premiere episode. Although Captain Pike and the Enterprise crew are in the midst of a crisis with the Gorn, before long the Starfleet Officers are bound to congregate in Pike’s kitchen once more.
Anson Mount and the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds took part in an hourlong Q&A to benefit the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, and Mount was asked about the origin of Captain Pike’s kitchen. Anson says the idea for Pike to have a kitchen came about during a brainstorming session about Pike’s character with Strange New Worlds showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. One of the things Akiva and Henry, our showrunners, are so good at is that… occasionally, they’ll have meetings where they bring each one of us into the writers’ room to talk character. And the first time that we did this while in the planning for season 1… It’s a lot of them asking us questions, actually.
I said there’s very few things about Pike that I know. And one of them is that when any crew members comes to him with a concern, everything else goes away. It’s all about this person in front of him because that’s his greatest asset. He’s smart enough to know that his crew is really the engine that runs the Enterprise. And for some reason, that sparked an idea in Avika who said. “I’m getting a picture of maybe Captain’s Table dinners.”
And I said, “Oh wait a minute.” Because he’s a horse guy, and he can’t take his horse on the Enterprise. What if each Captain gets one ask for their quarters. One special ask. And what if Pike’s other thing is cooking, and so he asked for a kitchen. And Akiva said, “That’s it. I’m calling [production designer] Jonathan Lee right now. We’re getting you a kitchen.”… And It’s been great. It’s turned out to be a very useful space.

Pike’s Kitchen Has Been A Staple Of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Some of the most endearing scenes between the crew of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have taken place in Captain Pike’s kitchen. Strange New Worlds episode 2 set the tone with the series’ first dinner at the Captain’s Table that welcomed Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). Since then, Pike and his girlfriend, Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano), have shared romantic meals, and Chris even prepared Vulcan delicacies for Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) to impress the family of his fiancee, T’Pring (Gia Sandhu).
Captain Pike’s quarters also have a fireplace, which seems incredibly dangerous on a starship.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is beloved for its character interactions, and Pike’s kitchen is one of the best settings for the Enterprise crew to be themselves off duty while the Captain personally prepares a gourmet meal. The addition of the Port Galley bar in Strange New Worlds season 2 gave the show a new common area to congregate in, but this only makes scenes in Pike’s kitchen more welcome and special. Hopefully, Captain Pike will host more dinners and prepare more meals in his extraordinary kitchen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.
