Now that both the writers’ and actors’ strikes have come to an end, Hollywood can start pressing ahead with major projects. And it seems that John Wick 5 will be one such project. During a recent quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake revealed that work is now underway on a script for the fifth John Wick outing, as well as revealing that several spinoffs are also in the works. See what he had to say below (via Comicbook.com).
“On the Wick side we got multiple spin-offs and Wick Five,” Joe Drake said. “We started to work on (it) right when the writer’s strike started and we’ve gotten back to work as soon as it ended.”
So, despite this year’s John Wick: Chapter 4 seemingly bringing the main franchise, and the journey of Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving assassin, to an end, a fifth movie is happening. Whether fans want it to or not.
As well as a further sequel, it was also revealed that several spinoffs set within the world of Wick are also now in development. This is likely to be alongside the likes of the Peacock prequel series The Continental: From the World of John Wick and the upcoming movie Ballerina. The latter will introduce No Time to Die star Ana de Armas as another assassin on a quest for revenge.
While details of what John Wick 5 will involve remain under wraps, producer Basil Iwanyk has teased a little of what to expect.
“If there is another John Wick movie, which I do believe there will be, we don’t know what it is yet, but I do believe. I do feel like it will be a completely other book. If these movies were four chapters, you kind of blame it on the metaphor. The next John Wick will be another book. It won’t be like six months later from John Wick 4.”
A John Wick Anime Series Is Also in the Works
Not only are John Wick 5, Ballerina, and several spinoffs now on the way, but director Chad Stahelski has also revealed that an anime series is also in the works. Meaning there will be plenty more John Wick-related action in the future. Perhaps too much…
“So we’re really looking forward to that; we’re really excited about it because we’re doing that and a Japanese anime because I love Japanese anime so much. So to create all the cool stories that anime could achieve better than we could and the TV show to expand our world, we’ll still get our fix, you know what I mean? And we’ll still have all the fun.”
The world of John Wick clearly lends itself perfectly to anime, and will no doubt be the project fans are eager to see the most alongside a fifth outing.
Released back in March, John Wick: Chapter 4 was met with rave reviews and grossed over $440 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The first big screen spinoff, Ballerina, is set for release on June 7, 2024.
