How Strange New Worlds’ Crossover Changed Lower Decks’ Mariner & Boimler
The Ensigns got promoted to Lieutenants in Lower Decks season 4.
Even though Mariner reminded Boimler that they’re “not supposed to talk about that whole Pike thing” at the start of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, the two Ensigns were changed for the better for the experience of meeting the 23rd century USS Enterprise crew. Boimler was inspired by his time with Captain Pike, who planted the seed for Bradward to level up and take charge more in Lower Decks season 4. Boimler’s heroism in saving the USS Voyager from holographic villains resulted in a promotion to Lieutenant, junior grade, not just for Boimler but for Mariner and their other Lower Decker friends on the USS Cerritos, as well.
Mariner met her hero, Ensign Nyota Uhura, in the Strange New Worlds crossover, and this experience also helped set up Beckett’s Lower Decks season 4 arc. Self-destructively rebelling against her promotion, Mariner confronted her trauma over the death of her Starfleet Academy friend, Ensign Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill), in Star Trek: The Next Generation. By the end of Lower Decks season 4, Mariner asserted her heroism and saved the galaxy from disgraced ex-Starfleet Cadet Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill). Whether Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can have another crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks remains to be seen, but this historic meeting of the Enterprise and Cerritos characters was a smashing success.
