Fear the Walking Dead brought back an old favorite from earlier in the franchise, making it possible for the series to solve a long-running mystery.

This article contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead season 8.

Summary

  • Fear the Walking Dead’s return of the metal head walkers could finally solve the mystery of their origins from seven years ago.
  • The Sanctuary’s abundance of metal head walkers suggests that the current villains may have created them, providing potential answers.
  • The resurgence of the metal head walkers not only presents an opportunity for the show to tie loose ends, but also reminds viewers of the unique and dangerous nature of these zombies.

In the latest episode of Fear the Walking Dead, season 8, episode 9, a classic part of the original The Walking Dead franchise returned, insinuating that perhaps the spinoff series could solve a mystery that has been left unanswered for seven yearsFear the Walking Dead is currently airing its eighth and final season on AMC. Thus far, the series has succeeded at bringing its story full circle by reintroducing old characters and sending the cast into situations that they have already lived before. There are going to be 12 episodes of Fear the Walking Dead season 8.

Another past character that Fear the Walking Dead recently brought back: the metal head walkers. In season 8, episode 9, Dwight is coming to terms with the demons of his past, and in doing so, reveals what happened to Negan’s Sanctuary. While there, he spots the metal head walkers that Eugene made for Negan during The Walking Dead. In fact, there are a lot of them, more than when Negan returned in The Walking Dead season 9, implying that whoever resides there has made more of them. Since the metal head walkers were first introduced in season 6, Fear the Walking Dead could solve the seven-year-long mystery of their origins.

Dwight Fear the Walking Dead

The fact that the Sanctuary has so many metal head walkers leaves the door open for Fear the Walking Dead to finally explain where these zombies first came from in season 6. Although Eugene began manufacturing these walkers for Negan in The Walking Dead, it was never explained where that very first one came from which inspired Eugene to make more. To be clear, Eugene did not create the metal head walker, but essentially borrowed the idea from what he saw in the woods with Abraham. So, now there is a chance for this to come to light.

First and foremost, perhaps the villains now residing in the Sanctuary were the original creators of the metal head walker. If this were true, they could most definitely give an explanation as to where that first metal head walker came from, and once again, Fear the Walking Dead would be bringing a story full circle. However, even if they weren’t the creators, they might still have the answer audiences are seeking. Considering that they have clearly been making more of the walkers, there is a chance that they know something Eugene and Negan didn’t back in The Walking Dead.

Aside from being an opportunity to solve a long-running mystery, the resurgence of the metal head walkers is a reminder of how awesome the zombies actually were. Coated in metal, these walkers were immune to certain attacks, making them more dangerous to fight against. When fighting against one, they can be pretty difficult to kill, but as a defense mechanism, the metal head walkers are sort of genius. Clearly they have continued to do the Sanctuary well. Furthermore, the metal head walkers bring to mind Eugene and his intelligence as well. Therefore, Fear the Walking Dead season 8 has made yet another move of nostalgia and possibility.
