David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez called out Saul “Canelo” Alvarez after he made Demetrius Andrade throw in the towel on Saturday night at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas to set the stage for the highly-anticipated bout between the Mexican boxers.
Benavidez, 26, has been after a fight against Alvarez for several years now and remains the mandatory challenger for the WBC super middleweight championship belt held by Canelo.
During his postfight press conference, Benavidez made it clear he wants Canelo next, but so do the fans. The fight would take place May 2024 in Las Vegas.
“The people want Canelo and that’s what we want, too. Give me the fight we all want to see,” Benavidez said. “Let’s give the people what they want to see. They want to see David Benavidez versus Canelo.”
David Benavidez hugs Mike Tyson
Prior to calling out Canelo, right after retaining his interim belt, Benavidez momentarily stepped out of the ring to hug legendary boxer Mike Tyson, who came up with the Mexican’s nickname.
“I told Mike Tyson that I love him and thanks for all the motivation that he has given me,” Benavidez said once he returned to the ring.
Benavidez, who remained undefeated, displayed a ton of confidence and poise as he handed Andrade his first career loss.
