The Dallas Cowboys entered the NFL Draft with a focus on selecting a running back, but their plans were foiled by the Miami Dolphins. Jaylen Wright, a player from Tennessee, remained available on the draft board even after the first round was over, catching the attention of Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.

As the draft progressed to the fourth round, Wright was still on the table. The Dolphins did not make any moves during the earlier rounds of the draft, but in a strategic maneuver, Chris Grier capitalized on an opportunity to disrupt the Cowboys’ plans.

Despite not having a pick in the third or fourth rounds, Miami traded back into the fourth round to select Jaylen Wright, leaving Dallas disappointed.

According to Fowler, the Cowboys were keen on Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright, who was selected by Miami as the 120th overall pick in the fourth round. Fowler mentioned that if the Cowboys had a pick in the fourth round and Wright was still on the board, they likely would have drafted him.

The Miami Dolphins have strengthened their offense by adding speed, making them now home to the fastest offense in the NFL. With the arrival of Jaylen Wright, who will compete for playing time with De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert, the team looks to make strides in the upcoming season.

However, this move came at a cost, as Miami had to give up a third-round pick in the 2025 draft as part of the deal. This forced the Dallas Cowboys to change their plans in the running back position, leading them to sign Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year contract.

The Dolphins’ clever maneuvering also involved a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, potentially disrupting the Cowboys’ strategy. Elliott, who had a subpar performance in the 2023 season with the New England Patriots, will return to the Cowboys in a different role than before.

Despite this new addition, the Cowboys still face uncertainties in their running back position moving forward.

The Cowboys have bolstered their running back options by securing Ezekiel Elliott, a two-time league rushing champion, on a one-year deal. In addition to signing free agent Royce Freeman, the team also has Deuce Vaughn, a sixth-round pick from the 2023 draft, and Rico Dowdle, who provided support for Tony Pollard last season. Nevertheless, uncertainties remain regarding the success of the running back position for the Cowboys in the upcoming 2024 season.
