Summary
- Abby’s character from The Last of Us video game will be featured in season 2 of the TV show, with the role already cast.
- The creator of The Last of Us confirmed this news but did not reveal who will be playing Abby.
- However, the production of the show cannot move forward until the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in the industry are resolved, leaving uncertainty about when filming can begin.
The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin reveals the role of Abby has already been cast. While Abby’s character was not directly explored in The Last of Us season 1, it has been hinted on HBO’s The Last of Us Podcast that the character, who appears in The Last of Us: Part II game, will feature in season 2. Those familiar with the game have even theorized that Abby may have been glimpsed in season 1 as a girl Ellie waves at from across the way when she and Joel enter the safe zone encampment headed by Joel’s brother Tommy.
Speaking with the LA Times Mazin confirms The Last of Us season 2 has already cast Abby. The Last of Us creator would not say who it was that is set to play Abby, but that the role has already been filled. Mazin would not reveal additional spoilers as to Abby’s character, other than to mention that she will be a rival to Ellie in season 2.
When Will The Last of Us Season 2 Film?
With a major season 2 character being cast, it is clear that The Last of Us season 2 has the momentum it needs to move forward. Mazin has also recently said that he has been mentally writing his ideas up for The Last of Us’s sophomore effort. According to Mazin, The Last of Us will be “raring to go” once the strikes reach their end.
The Last of Us still faces the critical barrier of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes affecting Hollywood writers and actors. Whatever Mazin is crafting internally cannot move forward with a writing team until the former strike is resolved, and The Last of Us cannot start filming until the conclusion of the latter strike. With recent news indicating that studios are continuously noncompliant in strike negotiations, the strike end date still remains unclear.
This leaves a lot of uncertainty as to when The Last of Us will be able to move forward on their production. The Last of Us’s first season took over a year to film, so audiences could be looking at a follow-up as late as 2025, depending on how drawn out the strikes become. It is hopeful to know all that The Last of Us has lined up Abby’s casting, but the team cannot be “raring to go” truly until Hollywood resolves the strikes.
