10 Joһn Wiсk Sсenes Tһаt Mаke Absolutely No Sense

It may be the most gripping action franchise of the past decade, but things don’t always adhere to strict logic in the world of John Wick.

John Wick uses a silenced pistol amid a crowd in John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum.

  • John Wick’s invincibility and ability to survive outrageous falls and injuries push the limits of believability but are often overlooked for the sake of thrilling action sequences.
  • The John Wick franchise features scenes and plot points that make little sense upon close inspection, but the visual spectacle of the action sequences compensates for these inconsistencies.
  • The world of John Wick presents a currency system that is quite difficult to understand.

The John Wick franchise has earned a reputation for pulse-raising action scenes, but sometimes the audience is required to suspend their disbelief. John Wick stars Keanu Reeves as a retired assassin who is dragged back into the criminal underworld following the death of his wife. As one of the most original action franchises of the last decade, John Wick has several upcoming spinoffs and sequels looking to expand its rich universe. Despite its remarkable popularity, John Wick can be guilty of pushing the limits of believability at times.

Like many iconic action movie heroes, John Wick can often appear to be invincible. He can survive outrageous falls and injuries that would kill any regular human being, but he always seems to dust himself off and keep going. John also finds unusual methods of killing his enemies, often resorting to bizarre weapons that wouldn’t have the same impact in real life. Upon close inspection of the four John Wick movies, there are tons of scenes and plot points that make very little sense, but the action sequences are usually enough of a reason to ignore a few inconsistencies.

10 Cassian Buys John A Drink

John Wick: Chapter 2

Gold coins in John Wick

The John Wick franchise has crafted an intricate world of assassins and warring criminal syndicates, but some of the details can be a little puzzling. John pays for his room at The Continental with a single gold coin when he first arrives, and every other transaction also requires the same payment. When Cassian and John are at the bar in the safe haven of The Continental, Cassian pays for a round of drinks with a single coin. It’s not clear how a swanky hotel room can cost the same as two shots of bourbon, but the world of John Wick could explore how exactly the currency system works in future stories.

9 John Escapes On Horseback

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

It’s one of the most memorable images of the entire franchise, but John Wick galloping through the streets of New York is only made possible by a complete lack of sense from the assassins following him. John Wick has some jaw-dropping sequences involving guns which are far more visually interesting than most other action movies, but whenever a gun would be the easiest way to kill John, his attackers are usually wielding knives or swords. Director Chad Stahelski has defended John Wick‘s stylized action, even if it would be more logical for the assassins to shoot the horse.

8 Dead Bodies In Grand Central Station

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick walks through Grand Central Station

John is traveling to The Continental when assassins corner him at Grand Central Station. They quickly dispatch two rival assassins with knives before confronting John, all in one of the busiest train terminals in the world. The dead assassins are taken away quickly, although presumably, their lifeless bodies would have to be carried through the station somehow without anyone noticing. John stabs one of his pursuers shortly afterward, leaving his body laid out in clear view. There’s a common movie trope that New Yorkers tend to mind their own business, but it’s inconceivable that none of the hundreds of commuters would stop to check on the man lying on the floor.

7 Cassian And John’s Subway Shootout

John Wick: Chapter 2

In another scene set in a bustling train station, Cassian chases after John. The two assassins walk calmly among a large crowd of people while trying to shoot at one another with silenced pistols. The pistols are far quieter than they would be in real life, never mind the fact that none of the people walking past see the guns, or the puffs of smoke as bullets fly into the concrete walls. Even if the sound of a gunshot was completely silenced, that would have no effect on the noise of the bullet’s impact. John’s heavily bleeding face would likely draw attention anyway, even if he didn’t have a gun.

6 Viggo Captures John

John Wick

Despite putting a $2 million bounty on John’s head, Viggo passes up the perfect chance to kill him. Viggo stands over a barely conscious John with a gun in his hand but decides instead to capture him and wait for him to regain consciousness. The scene is a prime example of plot armor, as it would have made much more sense for Viggo to simply kill John, thereby protecting himself and his son. Of course, John Wick manages to escape. Even when Viggo does give the order to kill him, the guards decide to suffocate him with a plastic bag instead of shooting him.

5 John Survives Falling From A Building

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

At the end of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, he falls from a five-story building, through a fire escape and a metal awning before crashing down onto the street. He may wear a bulletproof suit, but scenes like this suggest his bones are equally unbreakable. In John Wick: Chapter 4, he walks away from a similarly brutal fall after being kicked down hundreds of concrete steps in Paris. The longer the franchise has continued, the more John has taken on the invincible air of a superhero. Despite his apparent death at the hands of Caine, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see John Wick return for Chapter 5.

4 John’s Endless Supply Of Bullets

John Wick: Chapter 2

John Wick on a rampage through an art gallery

The Bowery King makes a point of giving John a pistol with just seven bullets. The scene sets up a tense confrontation at the art gallery as John pursues Santino, but the premise is cut short when John grabs a gun from the first henchman he kills. His first pistol may have only had seven bullets, but the replacement has a seemingly infinite magazine. John rampages through the art gallery killing dozens of Santino’s men, all without having to reload an ordinary-looking pistol. John Wick’s impressive kill count sometimes relies on a pinch of good luck, even if it doesn’t strictly adhere to logic.

3 Killa’s Poker Game

John Wick: Chapter 4

Killa in John Wick

German mob boss Killa Harkan proposes a poker game with John, Caine, and Mr. Nobody to decide who should be able to claim the bounty on John’s head. John Wick has always kept things interesting with different weapons and creative methods of taking down enemies, but John slicing Killa’s neck open with a playing card is too far-fetched. No playing card could break through the skin as easily as this one, and the knife-like sound effects don’t help with believability. It’s also unexplained how Caine can read his cards. They aren’t written in braille, and he doesn’t have anyone by his side to help him.

2 John Journeys Through The Desert

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick in a desert

John’s attempts to track down The Elder send him on a fable-like journey through the desert, where he essentially has to keep walking until he drops. Of all of John Wick‘s unbelievable scenes, this is one that has been thoroughly debunked by an expert. Survival expert Lee Stroud offered his take on John’s trek over the sand dunes, claiming that he would have struggled to survive with his walking technique. Stroud’s criticism shows that the movie doesn’t show an accurate portrayal of conditions in the desert, but even without any expert analysis, it’s clear that John should take off his black suit jacket and tie.

1 The Berlin Night Club Fight

John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick holding a gun in a club in John Wick

Bystanders in the world of John Wick have to ignore an awful lot of chaos, especially in the Berlin nightclub fight. John singlehandedly fights off the German mob before a showdown with Killa himself. Not only do the nightclub’s patrons decide to stay put, but they keep dancing throughout the whole ordeal as if nothing is happening. This echoes a similar scene in the first John Wick movie when the heavy thump of club music manages to conceal the sounds of gunfire. John Wick: Chapter 4 boasts some killer quotes and incredible fight scenes, but there are times when the highly stylized action veers into the absurd.
