Tyler O’Neill left the Red Sox’ 6-3 loss to the Brewers after seven innings Saturday because of right knee soreness.
Red Sox’ Tyler O’Neill jumps as he catches a fly ball during the second inning Saturday
“I’ve been dealing with it for a little while,” O’Neill said. “So it just kind of intensified a little more than I wanted it to. The trainers noticed and took me out of the game. So I think it was the right move for today.”
O’Neill went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He flied out to center field to end the bottom of the sixth inning. He then played left field in the seventh but Rob Refsnyder replaced him in the field to begin the eighth inning.
“I’ve been grinding through it for a little bit,” O’Neill said. “Felt it more so on that last swing that I took kind of coming out of the box. Feel like my cleat got caught or something in the batter’s box there. So it didn’t feel too good.”
Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta escaped two-out trouble during the second inning when O’Neill bailed him out with a leaping catch in front of the Green Monster. He said that play didn’t aggravate the knee.
“That one felt fine,” he said. “That one felt good to get out on the field and make a good play for the boys. Too bad we couldn’t come back today.”
O’Neill is 11-for-73 (.151) with 36 strikeouts during May. He was asked if the soreness has affected his at-bats recently.
“Maybe a little bit,” O’Neill said. “I’m really trying to manage my workload right now and make sure my body is in a good spot to get out there every day. I’ve been able to sneak some more DH (starts) in recently. So that’s been helping. I’m just trying to grind through it. You’re not going to feel 100% all season. So something that I’m managing and everyone here is on top of. We’re just trying to do the most we can with it.”
He’s unsure if he’ll play Sunday in the three-game series finale.
“I don’t know what it’s going to look like,” he said. “Right now they have me day-to-day.”
