Star Trek: Discovery series lead Sonequa Martin-Green hints that there’s a “big thing” in season 5. Martin-Green plays Captain Michael Burnham, who leads the USS Discovery in a hunt for “the greatest treasure in the known galaxy,” which is an artifact tied to an 800-year-old Romulan vessel in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. And it seems the final season of Discovery, which will hold its world premiere at SXSW in March, is indeed going “big.”
TVLine interviewed Sonequa Martin-Green at SCAD TVFest about Star Trek: Discovery season 5. While careful to avoid spoilers, Martin-Green emphasized that there’s a “big thing” that will wow Star Trek fans in the final season. Read her quote and watch the video interview below:
Even though the stakes are as high as they could possibly be, ‘cause there’s a big thing – there’s a BIG THING in season 5 – there is also a great sense of adventure and fun that we were really adamant about injecting into the show. So it’s a bit of a tonal shift that I think people will enjoy.
TVLine also asked about the chances of seeing “familiar faces” outside of the series’ regular crew in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which is a question Sonequa liked and gracefully side-stepped:
Oh, that’s a nice question. I hope those chances are good.
Every Star Trek Theory On Discovery Season 5’s Treasure
Captain Burnham and the crew are on an intergalactic treasure hunt in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but what is it, and does it link to classic Trek?
Captain Burnham & Book Reunite In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5
Discovery season 5 also deepens the series’ other characters
Sonequa Martin-Green also responded to TVLine‘s question about Captain Burnham’s relationship with Cleveland Booker (David Ajala). Book and Burnham ended Star Trek: Discovery season 4 apart, but a new clip released at CCXP in December showed Michael and Book together on a dangerous mission. Regarding Book and Burnham reuniting, Martin-Green said:
That trailer would seem to suggest that they are on some sort of mission together… The relationship between Burnham and Book is definitely gonna be covered. It’s part of the story, but there are a lot of relationships… There’s no stone left unturned is a great way to say it. We dig into some of everything in season 5. And I think people will feel like they’re getting to know these people better than ever before.
One knock against Star Trek: Discovery has always been its laser-focus on Michael Burnham and lack of character development of many of the USS Discovery’s crew members, but this looks like something Discovery season 5 will address. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also introducing new characters such as L’ak (Elias Toufexis), Moll (Eve Harlow), and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and Doug Jones teased a change to Captain Saru‘s Starfleet career. After 2 years of waiting, anticipation is high for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 and how big the series’ final season will be.
