A new teaser for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live reveals the release date for Rick and Michonne’s return. The next up in a large batch of spinoffs is a show focused on beloved couple Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), two characters from the original series who have been off on their own adventures since before The Walking Dead came to a close. Both characters made a surprise reappearance in the flagship show’s final episode (which aired in 2022), foreshadowing their imminent return.
During the Fear the Walking Dead series finale, AMC unveiled a new teaser trailer for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 1 which reveals that the show will premiere on February 25, 2024. Check out the teaser below:
Although it is only 30 seconds long, the new teaser is jam-packed, interspersing behind-the-scenes interview clips with new footage from the show. While it still holds off on showing the pair finally reuniting, the footage of the characters on their separate journeys is action-packed and introduces quick glimpses at some of their new friends and foes.
When Will Rick & Michonne Finally Reunite?
Although Rick and Michonne’s romance was one of the most important relationships in The Walking Dead, the pair have been separated for quite some time. Rick initially departed the show in season 9, but Michonne’s exit wasn’t until season 10. Additionally, while they both appeared in the Walking Dead series finale, they notably remained separated and in fact seemed to be shown in two disparate timelines, as they were both holding the same journal.
In Rick’s scene, he leaves his bag containing the journal in a boat while a Civic Republic Military helicopter approaches.
The question remains as to when the couple will finally reunite. While this announcement has revealed that viewers will only have to wait a few months to find out, the structure of the show would seem to indicate that they will finally reunite sometime within the first two episodes. While this isn’t the precedent set by the other spinoff The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which is still holding out on Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) reunion with Carol (Melissa McBride), that situation was different because McBride will not become a member of the main cast until season 2.
Because both Gurira and Lincoln are main cast members of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, it makes sense that they will come together much sooner. There are only going to be six episodes in the show, so they have a relatively compact timeline in which to do so. It would likely make the most sense for the pair to reunite at the very end of the premiere episode as a cliffhanger. If the creators do hold off, episode 2 seems the most likely time for the reunion, just in time for the story to kick into high gear.
