Speaking to Variety at Elle’s Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles, Fantasia Barrino signaled her intent to star in a future John Wick movie, if given the chance. According to Barrino, she wants to step out of her comfort zone and “kick ass” in a role audiences wouldn’t expect her to play. “I want to step out and do a character you’d probably never think of me as. Best known for winning American Idol and carving out a successful music career, Barrino plays the most prominent part of her acting career so far as she stars as Celie Harris-Johnson in the anticipated remake of The Color Purple. The film chronicles her character’s struggles as a Black woman living in the South during the early 1900s, dealing with physical and mental trauma while trying to reunite with her runaway sister Nettie Harris (Ciara Wilson/Halle Bailey), who left home because of her abusive father. Barrino previously starred as Celie during The Color Purple‘s Broadway run throughout the late 2000s.
The Color Purple remake is a revamped adaptation of the original 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg alongside Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery and Albert Johnson. Regarded as one of the greatest films of its time, the original version of The Color Purple won 11 Oscar nominations, including a Best Actress nod for Goldberg and Best Supporting Actress selections for Winfrey and Avery. Much like the original, the upcoming remake is based on the titular Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker. Warner Bros. released an official trailer for the film in October.

Warner Bros. launches a new trailer for the upcoming adaptation of The Color Purple, starring Fantasia Barrino and The Little Mermaid’s Halle Bailey.
Whether Barrino will get the chance to star in a John Wick film depends on the direction Lionsgate goes with the franchise as they develop the upcoming fifth installment. The studio insisted the film would not be made without star Keanu Reeves, though his future in the film series is still uncertain, especially after the way Chapter 4 ended. The franchise has expanded thanks to the recent spinoff miniseries, The Continental, as well as the upcoming film, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas.
