With A Cast Like This, Opus Could Be A24’s Next Horror Hit
The full plot details of Opus are not yet confirmed, but the general synopsis reveals a story involving the return of a pop star following his decades-long disappearance. Opus is directed by first-time feature director Mark Anthony Green. The film will be produced by Collin Creighton, Brad Weston, Poppy Hanks, Jelani Johnson, and Josh Bachove. Even with few plot details available, the Opus cast alone leaves a lot to look forward to.
Opus combines up-and-coming talents like Edebiri and Midthunder (who had a breakout performance in last year’s Prey), with more seasoned stars like Malkovich. Combining breakout stars with veteran talents is common for A24-distributed works. The company has employed similar strategies in horror films like Green Room and Hereditary, boding well for the repeat of this tactic in Opus.
All of these actors–most recently in the case of Midthunder, Edebiri, and Bartlett–have showcased their scene-stealing abilities, hinting at a strong ensemble cast for Opus. Bartlett has done so in both The White Lotus and The Last Of Us, wherein his Emmy-nominated performance came from just a single episode. Edebiri has taken the TV world by storm with her alluring performance as Sydney in The Bear, as well as her role in this year’s wacky dark comedy Bottoms, whereas Midthunder captivated audiences with her lead role in Prey. All of these factors are good signs for Opus, which has the chance to become A24’s next horror hit.
A24’s most recent horror movie, Talk To Me, earned $90.5 million at the box office on a reported $4.5 million budget.
