Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ Christina Chong has heard and reacted to fans’ fears that her character, Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh, will die. La’an is a popular new character created for Strange New Worlds, but she has ties to a major Star Trek legacy character, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán). Sharing a genetic bloodline with one of the most nefarious villains in Star Trek history has been the bane of La’an’s life, and her dread that she could become evil like Khan has haunted her since childhood.
Christina Chong joined her fellow Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast members Anson Mount and Ethan Peck at Toronto Comic Con for a panel. As reported by Flickering Myth, Chong has been regularly told by fans that they are concerned that La’an Noonien-Singh won’t survive Strange New Worlds because La’an isn’t in Star Trek: The Original Series. Read her quote below:
Listen, I’ve had a lot of people come up to me and say ‘We’re really worried your character is going to die’ and I’m like ‘Really? Do you know something I don’t?’
Christina Chong also has thoughts on La’an’s potential demise as well as the possibility of her turning evil just like Khan:
I think I would love somehow for La’an to have some kind of superpower that turns her evil and that becomes her downfall, and then she dies… but not until the very last episode of the very last season!
La’an has not displayed any super strength like the genetically-engineered Khan, and Christina Chong’s comments allude to La’an having no superpowers, although Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has also hinted that La’an did inherit aspects of Khan.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with an epic cliffhanger and here’s everything known about when it will be resolved in season 3.
What’s Next For La’an In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3?
Khan’s legacy may continue to haunt La’an
Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh’s immediate dilemma in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is surviving being kidnapped by the Gorn at the end of Strange New Worlds season 2. La’an has survived Gorn abduction as a child, which left her traumatized, but this also could be Noonien-Singh’s chance to overcome the Gorn once and for all. When La’an returns to her duties as Security Chief of the USS Enterprise, she has unresolved romantic feelings towards Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) to deal with.
Meeting Khan as a boy gave La’an a new perspective about her despotic ancestor.
Khan’s legacy has been a specter hanging over La’an all her life, but La’an confronted it in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”. La’an saved the young Khan’s (Desmond Sivan) life from a time-traveling Romulan assassin named Sera (Adelaide Kane), and meeting Khan as a boy gave La’an a new perspective about her despotic ancestor. La’an Noonien-Singh is innately caring and heroic, but she understandably fears Khan’s evil could become her destiny. It remains to be seen whether or not La’an will evolve to be more like Khan in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.
