Star Trek: Discovery‘s season 5 cancelation doesn’t mean the series wasn’t a huge success that ushered in a new generation of Star Trek TV shows, says Roddenberry Entertainment executive Trevor Roth. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres Thursday, April 4, on Paramount+, and it’s the final season of the series led by Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham. Roth is Chief Operating Officer and executive producer of Roddenberry Entertainment, and he and CEO Rod Roddenberry focus on making sure the new Star Trek series reflect the vision and values of Gene Roddenberry.
At SXSW, Roddenberry COO Trevor Roth spoke to Screen Rant about Star Trek: Discovery season 5, the detractors of the series, and why Paramount+ canceled the show. Roth gave his perspective that Star Trek: Discovery is seen internally as “a huge success” for lasting five seasons in the current streaming market and ushering in “the next generation” of Star Trek TV series. Read his quote below:
I think there’s probably a lot of things that I don’t even understand that drive the decision [to cancel Discovery]. I think that we look at Discovery as a huge success. Five seasons in the streaming world of today is actually a really strong showing. And this is the one that really began the new iterations of Star Trek. Discovery was the one who sort of paved the way for this next generation, if you will, of stuff coming out there. So, it is bittersweet because it was the first, and it was on its shoulders that so many of the other [shows] stood or stand. And the people involved in Discovery, from Sonequa to Doug to everyone, [they are] just such wonderful people that have truly become like a family. It’s incredible to see how the dynamics have gotten them to be such a close-knit group, and how they truly care about each other on screen and off.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season of Paramount+’s flagship series, and here’s everything we know about Captain Burnham’s last voyages.
What Star Trek TV Shows & Movies Are Coming After Discovery Ends
Section 31 and Starfleet Academy are in the works
Star Trek: Discovery achieving season 5 makes it the longest-running Star Trek TV series since Star Trek: Voyager bowed out with 7 seasons in 2001. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 is also coming later in 2024 and matches Discovery, although, hopefully, it won’t be the final season of Lower Decks.Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is also filming season 3 now for a potential 2025 release on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will premiere on Netflix in 2024 with the potential for more seasons if the CGI animated series is a hit.
Paramount+ also has a new Star Trek series and even a movie in the works. Filming now in Toronto is Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, which is planned as the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, presumably a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery set in the 32nd century, is also in development for a possible 2025 or 2026 release. Unfortunately, there is no indication Paramount+ will make Star Trek: Picard‘s proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, but there is still plenty of Star Trek on the way after Star Trek: Discovery ends.
