Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta allowed five runs in the third inning

Rafael Devers broke up Milwaukee’s combined no-hit bid in the seventh with a leadoff double. He scored on Wilyer Abreu’s RBI double with one out.

The Red Sox tried to rally in the ninth. Devers led off with a single. Dom Smith walked for the third time in the game and Ceddanne Rafaela hit an RBI single to cut it to 6-3. But David Hamilton struck out with two runners on to end it.

Boston was last no-hit at Fenway Park on July 20, 1958, when Detroit’s Jim Bunning did it.

Something did happen Saturday at Fenway for the first time since 1958. Boston faced the same starter in back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 27-28, 1958, when Pedro Ramos did it for the Washington Senators.

Milwaukee went with lefty Jared Koenig as its opener for the second straight day. Righty Colin Rea replaced Koenig with one out in the second inning and kept Boston hitless until allowing two runs on three hits in the seventh.

Pivetta lasts 3.1 innings

Pivetta escaped two-out trouble during the second inning when left fielder Tyler O’Neill bailed him out with a leaping catch in front of the Green Monster.

But Pivetta couldn’t escape a two-out jam in the third inning. He retired the first two batters quickly, then allowed six straight hitters to reach.

Christian Yelich hit a ground-rule double and Willy Adames walked. Jake Bauers, Gary Sánchez and Sal Frelick each followed with an RBI single to put the Brewers ahead 3-0.

Joey Ortiz’s two-run double then made it 5-0.

Pivetta allowed five runs, seven hits and three walks while striking out three in 3 ⅓ innings.

Sunday’s game

Boston will look to avoid a three-game sweep Sunday. Tanner Houck (4-5, 1.94 ERA) is scheduled to start for Boston. Milwaukee has not named its starter.
