John Larroquette dons full Klingon attire again in an episode of NBC’s Night Court reboot after appearing as a Klingon in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. The original Night Court aired from 1984-1992, with John Larroquette starring as Assistant District Attorney Dan Fielding, a role that earned him four consecutive Emmy Awards. Larroquette reprises the role of Dan Fielding in the 2023 revival of Night Court, making him the only regular character from the original to join the cast of the reboot. Before Larroquette landed a starring role in Night Court, he appeared as the Klingon Maltz in 1984’s The Search for Spock.
Now in its second season, the revival of Night Court will air a new episode on Tuesday, January 30 entitled “Wrath of Comic-Con.” As part of the episode’s plot, Larroquette’s character will embrace his inner Klingon, donning a full costume, complete with forehead ridges and long hair. John Larroquette Portrayed Klingon Maltz in Star Trek: The Search For Spock
Maltz was the last member of Commander Kruge’s crew to survive.
In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Maltz served on a Klingon Bird-of-Prey under the command of Commander Kruge (Christopher Lloyd). While on his ship, Maltz watched the USS Enterprise self-destruct with many of his Klingon crew members aboard. Kruge then left Maltz in command of the ship as he went down to the Genesis planet to kill Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). After Kruge is killed, Maltz is then tricked into beaming up Captain Kirk and his crew, who easily take command of the Bird-of-Prey. Although Maltz claims that he does “not deserve to live,” Kirk eventually has the Klingon imprisoned, and he’s later taken into custody on Vulcan.
After Captain Kirk and his crew commandeer the Klingon Bird-of-Prey, they name it HMS Bounty for the famous ship that was taken over by mutineers in the 1700s. In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Kirk and his crew use the HMS Bounty to travel back in time to 1986 San Franciso.
After Maltz was the only Klingon to survive Star Trek III, John Larroquette expressed an interest in returning as the character. Despite this, the official fate of Maltz after his imprisonment remains unknown. Larroquette was not the only Star Trek actor to appear on the original Night Court, as Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Brent Spiner appeared in seven Night Court episodes as Bob Wheeler. Maltz won’t be returning to the Star Trek franchise, but at least John Larroquette gets another chance to appear as a Klingon.
Night Court season 2, episode 6, “Wrath of Comic-Con” airs Tuesday, January 30th on NBC at 8 pm. Night Court is also available to stream on Peacock.
