The Marvels makes a great point about Nick Fury and the MCU’s very first post-credits scene at the end of 2008’s Iron Man. Kicking off not only the greater interconnected world is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man’s post-credits scene was also the start of the end-credits tradition fans have come to expect over the last 15 years. However, The Marvels humorously points out that certain elements of Nick Fury’s offer to Tony Stark weren’t as established or fleshed out as he might have made them seem.
As seen at the end of The Marvels, Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) reveals that she’s come up with an idea. This is followed by a scene where Kamala is sitting in the shadows before recruiting Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye (Hailee Steinfeld). Revealing her intentions to form a new team of younger heroes (presumably the Young Avengers), this final scene where Kamala is channeling her inner Nick Fury is equally hilarious and exciting. However, it does highlight the bizarre nature of the original 2008 post-credits, considering everything that came after in Marvel’s Phase 1.
Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative Wasn’t As Established As It Seemed
Tony Stark Was The First Recruit
In Iron Man’s post-credits scene, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury similarly waits in the shadows before his first meeting with Tony Stark (Rober Downey Jr.). Confirming that Iron Man has just become part of a bigger universe, Fury tells Stark his name along with the offer to join the Avengers Initiative. However, there’s a sort of implication that the “Avengers Initiative” was something that was already established and that Tony Stark would perhaps be joining an already assembled team.
Naturally, future films in Marvel’s Phase 1 confirmed that Tony Stark was actually one of the first heroes Nick Fury reached out to. Furthermore, the Avengers Initiative was only a proposed idea that had officially been shut down before the events of 2012’s Avengers, though heroes were still assembled by Fury all the same thanks to the threat of Loki and Thanos’ Chitauri army. Considering Marvel Studios had no idea at the time if they could actually pay off Iron Man’s post-credits scene, it makes sense that the scene has become somewhat strange in hindsight.
Ms. Marvel Is Up Front About The Young Avengers Being A New Team
Kamala Came To Kate Bishop First
Ms. Marvel is doing her best to mirror Nick Fury from Iron Man’s post-credits in The Marvels’s ending scene, and it’s a great call back to the very first tag teasing more to come. However, Kamala ultimately comes clean and admits that Kate Bishop was the first person she came to recruit for the MCU’s Young Avengers. That being said, she does mention that she has leads on other heroes such as Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang.
As a result, Kamala’s “Young Avengers” recruitment scene in The Marvels feels more honest than the original overall. It’s seemingly a fun way for Marvel Studios to recognize the fact that Iron Man’s post-credits scene is just a little bit odd looking back 15 years later. At any rate, it should be very exciting to see the new team finally coming together, especially after so many potential Young Avengers recruits have been introduced in Phase 4 and the current Phase 5 of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
