Felix Unger Sorum also won bronze with Team Sweden.
While every hockey player dreams of winning a Stanley Cup, winning gold for your home country is probably a pretty close second.
That dream became a reality today for Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.
Necas and the Czechs shut out the Swiss 2-0 to capture the gold medal at the 2024 IIHF World Championship.
Not only that, but the tournament was held in Czechia giving that gold medal victory even more emotion.
Necas knew right away he wanted to compete for his home country given the chance and when Carolina was eliminated in the second round against the New York Rangers, he was in Czechia less than 48 hours later.
While the speedy winger only played in five games, he delivered big in some clutch moments.
He had a four point night along with scoring the game-winning goal in the semis against the Swedes and then he assisted on the dagger empty-netter in the final.
In addition, prospect Felix Unger Sorum took home a bronze medal as Sweden defeated Team Canada 4-2.
Unger Sorum only played two games for the Swedes, but the fact that he even made the star-studded roster as an 18-year-old speaks volumes about his future.
The Canes have a big decision coming up with Necas being that he’s up for a new contract as an RFA.
Rumors have been circulating that he may be unhappy with his role in Carolina, but he’s too good of a player to simply just give up on.
Necas has kept himself tight lipped about the situation since coming to Czechia despite frequent questions and even as recently as immediately following the win, Necas was asked about his contract situation, to which he allegedly replied, “Who cares?”
What happens with Necas will be one of the most important questions this offseason for the Hurricanes.
As an RFA Carolina still controls his rights, but with arbitration possible and many teams circling, could he be part of a blockbuster trade this summer?
