Hurricanes make huge Rod Brind’Amour decision after Stanley Cup Playoffs exit

The Hurricanes will continue to be coached by Rod Brind’Amour.

The Carolina Hurricanes did not take much time to make a decision on the future of head coach Rod Brind’Amour with the team. Brind’Amour and the Canes had just been struck out by the New York Rangers in six games in a thrilling second-round series in the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup, but Carolina has seemingly done its part in ensuring that Brind’Amour will not go anywhere else, as the franchise and the coach have agreed to keep their professional relationship going, according to Kevin Weekes of ESPN.

It has been over a decade since Brind’Amour joined the Hurricanes as a part of the team’s coaching staff. He began as an assistant coach in 2011. Seven years later, the Hurricanes decided to make him the team’s head coach. Brind’Amour had sweet success in his first year at the helm of Carolina, as he steered the franchise to its first appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2009. The Hurricanes have also made the postseason cut in each of the next five seasons under Brind’Amour, including in the 2023-24 campaign in which Carolina went 52-23.

With two conference finals appearances under Brind’Amour, the Hurricanes always seem to be in the conversation as a Stanley Cup title. However, the Cup has been elusive for Brind’Amour and Carolina, which ran out of steam in the Rangers series. New York buried the Canes in a 3-0 series deficit before Carolina won the next two games. The Rangers then snuffed out Carolina’s hopes for a comeback with a Game 6 victory last Thursday. A few days later, the Hurricanes showed how much they wanted Brind’Amour to continue his coaching tenure with them.

The Hurricanes have collected at least 111 points in each of the last three seasons under Brind’Amour, who also won a Stanley Cup with Carolina as a player back in 2006 when he also had 31 goals and 39 assists for the team. Overall in his playing career in the NHL which also saw him suit up for the St. Louis Blues and the Philadelphia Flyers, Brind’Amour had gathered 452 goals and 732 points across 1,484 games.

Social media reactions to Hurricanes’ deal with Rod Brind’Amour

Fans have plenty of different reactions to the recent move by Hurricanes on Brind’Amour. Here are a bunch of them from X:

“Good for Him and the Fans.”

“They will never win with their team’s structure. Plain and simple.”

“All the assistants coming back? Thought they would’ve made changes following their special teams struggles.”

“he’s literally the perfect coach for the team like??? he won their only cup lol”

“Until they get a great goalie in net it’ll be the same results show me a great goaltender & most of the time the coach follows suit”

“So they’ve cemented their status as this generations San Jose sharks”

“How is he going to coach (insert random team here) AND Carolina? That’s what everyone said was gonna happen.”

“I think it’s the players, not the coach, who are to blame for Carolina’s playoff struggles. Either they don’t get the goaltending or scoring”

“Leafs fire a good regular season coach whereas the Canes extend a good regular season coach. Not saying Keefe and Rod are equivalent coaches just spewing facts”
