The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 2 possibilities are teased by showrunner Scott M. Gimple. The Walking Dead universe continues its ongoing expansion with its newest spinoff, featuring the long-awaited returns of fan favorite characters Rick and Michonne. Though recent spinoffs Dead City and Daryl Dixon received season 2 renewals, The Ones Who Live has conspicuously not gotten the greenlight beyond season 1.
Appearing as part of AMC’s presentation at the recent TCA press event, showrunner Gimple offered a positive take on the possibility of The Ones Who Live season 1 getting a followup, suggesting that the show could go on even if Andrew Lincoln’s jokes about Rick dying in the finale came to pass, while emphasizing that he’s fully focused on season 1 for now. Check out his remarks below:
I would say… anything is possible. Even if Rick dies in the last episode, anything is possible. We’re focused on this one right now. This one came together in a really amazing way where there were all sorts of plans and the world changed and we altered those plans and we wound up with something we really like.
Why The Ones Who Live Can’t Kill Off Rick Grimes
The Walking Dead season 9 memorably provided an exit for Rick Grimes actor Lincoln, packing the show’s long-running character off for the CRM and an uncertain future. Viewers were then treated to several seasons of TWD without Rick, and the results were mixed to say the least.
Before The Ones Who Live was announced, it was reported that Rick Grimes would return via a trilogy of movies.
The Ones Who Live becomes the vehicle by which the universe finally brings back its main character, setting up a reunion between him and Michonne. Now that Rick is finally in the fold again, it would be a mistake to kill him off in the season 1 finale (all joking aside). TWD should keep the character alive, even if his future is left up in the air via cliffhanger, setting up the possibility of a return somewhere down the road (even if it’s years before he’s seen again).
TWD has introduced lots of characters over the years, but has established only a handful beyond Rick and Michonne, to whom viewers are legitimately attached. Maggie and Negan live on through Dead City, and Daryl and Carol continue through Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. Killing any of them, with the possible exception of Negan, would be a mistake, as it would only diminish the brand. Perhaps The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 1 will see the end of Rick, but it’s more likely he will survive, leaving the door open for season 2 and beyond.
