All 9 Walking Dead Actors In Invincible

Amazon Prime’s Invincible features an impressive cast of voice actors, including several big names from The Walking Dead television show. It’s not a simple coincidence either — Invincible is similarly derived from comic canon and authored by the post-apocalyptic horror drama creator, Robert Kirkman. Kirkman wrote Invincible, an account about a teenage boy adapting into the footsteps of his superhero father after developing superpowers, and released the comic shortly before launching The Walking Dead’s 2003 graphic series.

The series both found separate successes and were predestined to fulfill their stories onscreen, each amassing incredible popularity and critical acclaim. Invincible season 3’s release is eagerly anticipated by Kirkman fans and general audiences alike, but until its long-awaited release viewers are left to seek out and enjoy TheWalking Dead Easter eggs, allusions, and scores of identifiable voices present in season 1. Several TWD actors accompany Kirkman’s onscreen superhero chronicle, and their animated assemblage is just as exciting to watch as their The Walking Dead counterparts.

9 Steven Yeun

Plays Mark In Invincible And Glenn In The Walking Dead

The hero Invincible in Invincible

Steven Yeun is best known for his break-out role as apocalypse survivalist Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead. Yeun had a tremendous run in the television series with his character surviving the clutches of the undead and the worst of humanity up until The Walking Dead’s seventh season premiere. Glenn’s tragic death at the hands of former TWD antagonist, Negan Smith, shocked audiences and created a lasting impact within The Walking Dead’s universe; but what TWD’s franchise lost was a tremendous gain for the animated show, Invincible.

Glenn’s demise made it considerably easy for Steven Yeun to sign on for a more prominent role in Prime’s Invincible series. Yeun plays the 17-year-old main character named Mark Grayson whose newly discovered superpowers give rise to the creation and utilization of his alter ego. Suitably dubbed Invincible, Yeun’s superhero character is humorous, headstrong, and nearly invulnerable — a comforting set of knowledge in view of the fact that Yeun is a confirmed Invincible season 3 character and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

8 Lauren Cohan

Plays War Woman In Invincible And Maggie In The Walking Dead

War Woman in Invincible

Although Glenn met his end in The Walking Dead, his widow Maggie, played by actress Lauren Cohan, survived throughout the show’s run as a fierce leader and strong fighter. Her legacy in The Walking Dead is as evident as Glenn’s and, together, their Walking Dead love story resulted in their son, Hershel Rhee, an addition to the budding post-apocalyptic younger generation. By The Walking Dead season finale, Maggie and her son are able to enjoy the fruits of their endurance with Daryl, Carol, Judith, and more in the renewed and thriving Hilltop community.

The entire Guardians of the Globe is made up of The Walking Dead actors.

Lauren Cohan’s character in Invincible is not afforded a similar fate, however. Still, Cohan is a fierce leader and strong fighter as War Woman, the weapon-wielding and Amazon-esque co-creator of Invincible’s superhero team, the Guardians of the Globe. However, Cohan’s superheroine is quickly killed off in Invincible’s debut episode. Her appearance as War Woman, though fleeting, is still satisfying, for the entire Guardians of the Globe is made up of The Walking Dead actors, and her voice performance among the others is a delightful indulgence.

7 Lennie James

Played Darkwing In Invincible And Morgan In The Walking Dead

Darkwing in Invincible

On guard as the Guardians of the Globe’s other co-founder was the hoverboard-riding and gadget-brandishing superhero, Darkwing. He, War Woman, and the rest of the original Guardians of the Globe are all unfortunately killed by Invincible’s leading villain before any real screen time, but his impact, and voice, is cherished by audiences nonetheless. Darkwing is voiced by The Walking Dead’s Lennie James, known for his various appearances in The Walking Dead and main role in Fear The Walking Dead as Morgan Jones.

Like many of The Walking Dead actors in Invincible outside of Steven Yuen, Lennie James’ character in the animated superhero show has a much less prominent role than his TWD one. Morgan was a recurring presence throughout The Walking Dead before he moved over to Fear The Walking Dead, and was one of the shows most intriguing — and tragic — characters.

6 Ross Marquand

Played The Immortal & Aquarus In Invincible And Aaron In The Walking Dead

The Immortal and Aquarius in Invincible

Among the original, but short-lived, Guardians of the Globe team are the heroes The Immortal and Aquarus, both voiced by The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand. While the power of the sea could not protect Aquarius from the strength of Invincible’s villain Omni-Man, The Immortal was capable of several resurgences from the fatal attacks of Omni-man with the help of the Global Defense Agency.

Marquand returned in Invincible season 2 to reprise his role as The Immortal.

Ross Marquand’s The Walking Dead character Aaron survived through to the series’ finale. Aaron fostered many massive accomplishments throughout The Walking Dead, including bringing Rick Grimes and his people to the safe haven of Alexandria, but what’s to come in Aaron’s future is largely still a mystery. Marquand returned in Invincible season 2 to reprise his role as The Immortal. Aquarus, on the other hand, hasn’t been seen in the show after his death in Season 1.

5 Michael Cudlitz

Played Red Rush In Invincible And Abraham In The Walking Dead

Red Rush in Invincible

Unfortunately for actor Michael Cudlitz neither his Invincible hero nor his The Walking Dead character survived their respective shows. Cudlitz voiced for Guardians of the Globe member Red Rush, the speedster who explicitly had his head crushed at the hands of Omni-Man. Just like many of the other heroes killed off in the massacre at the start of Invincible, Red Rush never returned. It was a brief appearance, and his character in Invincible was far less memorable than his appearance in The Walking Dead.

However, Cudlitz’s The Walking Dead death was no less brutal, as the character Abraham was brutally beaten to death by Negan and a bat woven with barbed wire named Lucille back in season 7. Unfortunately for Abraham too, he was also killed during the same encounter with Negan that ended with Glenn dead too, meaning his death was somewhat overshadowed.

4 Chad Coleman

Played Martian Man In Invincible And Tyreese In The Walking Dead

Martian Man in Invincible

Another doubly demised actor who appeared in both Invincible and The Walking Dead is Chad Coleman. Coleman played the Guardians of the Globe member Martian Man in Invincible — an exiled alien hero equipped to become elastic and possess the ability of incredible strength. Omni-Man tore Martian Man apart in his elastic form, swiftly killing him. Martian Man didn’t return in the second season of Invincible, making Chad Coleman’s time on the show short.

In The Walking Dead, Coleman received a much slower and more agonizing death.

In The Walking Dead, Coleman received a much slower and more agonizing death. His character Tyrese is attacked in a routine perimeter check and perishes from a zombie bite on the arm. Tyreese lasted much longer on The Walking Dead than Martian Man did in Invincible, however. Tyreese was a prominent presence on the show, being introduced in season 3 and not dying until season 5.

3 Sonequa Martin-Green

Played Green Ghost In Invincible And Sasha In The Walking Dead

Green Ghost in Invincible

The last of the original Guardians of the Globe team that Omni Man wiped out during the first episode of Invincible season 1 is Green Ghost, who is also voiced by a member of The Walking Dead cast. Green Ghost was distinguished for her power of becoming intangible and making anyone she touches intangible as well. The Green Ghost, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, was no match for Omni-Man even considering her particular power, and when distracted by the corpse of her teammate, Omni-Man was able to propel his hand straight through the skull in her solid state.

In The Walking Dead, Sonequa Martin-Green plays Sasha, who lasted much longer in the show than Green Ghost. The severity Green Ghost’s death is extreme compared to Sasha’s forced hand in ingesting a cyanide tablet in The Walking Dead, however, it’s one of the many reasons that Invincible is strictly adult animation.

2 Khary Payton

Played Black Samson In Invincible And Ezekiel In The Walking Dead

Black Samson in Invincible

The Walking Dead’s Khary Payton had a good amount of screen time in Invincible and could even be featured in the future of the Invincible series. Because the original Guardians of the Globe met catastrophic destruction, a new one had to be built. It’s unsurprising to discover Khary Payton’s Black Samson became the leader of the new Guardians of the Globe — a remodel comprised of other highly-powered heroes (and phenomenal voice actors) like Robot (Zachary Quinto) and Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) — because he’s been the leader of a commanding group before.

In both shows, Khary Payton is a significant presence despite not being a lead character

Khary Payton played Ezekiel Sutton, also known as “King,” in The Walking Dead and co-lead the Militia group alongside Rick and Maggie. In both shows, Khary Payton is a significant presence despite not being a lead character, and both Ezekiel and Black Samson have gone on to be fan favorites among many of their respective viewers.

1 Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Played Negan In Walking Dead

Jeffrey Dean Morgan in TWD

While no casting confirmation has come yet, it’s long been rumored that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will join Steven Yeun in a future season of Invincible. Fans have scoured the comics for characters that would suit Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s casting, but Invincible has since kept that information under wraps. However, what hasn’t been kept quiet is Robert Kirkman’s desire to see more former Walking Dead stars appear in the animated series — at San Diego Comic-Con, Kirkman said

“I’m very excited about bringing people back to work with me because I miss people that have left various shows and things, so hopefully there will be a lot of familiar voices that will be cropping up in Invincible for many years to come – including, hopefully, eventually, Andy Lincoln and Danai Gurira.”

This is exciting news for most, especially those who are enthusiasts of Robert Kirkman and enjoyed the intersection of his projects. Season 2 of Invincible arrived in 2023, and if fans didn’t fine their favorite TheWalking Dead actors in the cast, there’s a good chance they’ll find them in the already confirmed season 3.

Did Invincible Season 2 Add Any New Walking Dead Actors?

Angstrom Lev in Invincible season 2 ep 8

There weren’t any new The Walking Dead cast members who appeared in season 2 of Invincible. However, there were several new names joining the show that viewers may recognize from other prominent TV series. Most notably, Three-time Primetime Emmy Award winner Sterling K. Brown, known for This Is Us, debuted in Invincible as new antagonist Angstrom Levy. Other new cast members in Invincible season 2 included Peter Cullen as Thadeus and Tatiana Maslany as Queen Aquaria.

There haven’t been any new cast members announced for Invincible season 3 yet, though there’ll undoubtedly be a few new additions. Who they’ll be is a mystery of course, but there’s every chance more names from The Walking Dead cast list will cross over to voice characters in InvincibleThere’s also of course the question around Jeffrey Dean Morgan, as many expected him to debut in the second season, which he eventually didn’t.
