There have been multiple NHL teams in the past that were down in a playoff series and came back to win, so there is no need for the Rangers to panic.
If you believe that because the Rangers lost the opener on Wednesday night, they are in trouble; think again and now listen up to The Maven.
I’m talking real hockey history; not once, but at least twice, grand comebacks were pulled off after gosh awful first game losses.
I’ll start with one of my favorite teams of all-time, the 1946-47 Maple Leafs.
Facing the defending champion Canadiens in the first round, they got blitzed, 6-0 and were given up for dead.
But, no, the Leafs rebounded and won the 1947 Stanley Cup in six games. (P.S. To show it was no fluke, they won two more for a total of three in a row and became the NHL’s first dynasty.)
In 1953, the defending Cup champ Detroit Red Wings opened the playoffs against a mediocre Boston Bruins. They trampled the Bruins 7-0 in the opener after which the Beantowners won the series in six games.
If this pair of comeback samples does not reassure you, bear in mind that the curtain-raiser at The Garden the other night was really nothing but a one-goal game.
And if any one of the Ranger hit goalposts had gone in, we might be talking about a Blueshirt victory.
Repeat: NOT TO WORRY.
