“We Would All Do It”: Discovery Season 5 Star Says Cast Would Do Star Trek Crossovers

Star Trek: Discovery series lead Sonequa Martin-Green speaks for the cast when she says they would all be willing to crossover with other Star Trek series. Discovery season 5 is the final season of the flagship Star Trek on Paramount+ series, poised to be a tonal shift into an epic intergalactic adventure as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery hunt for “the greatest treasure in the known galaxy.” The prize Burnham and others in the galaxy seek is an ancient artifact tied to an 800-year-old Romulan starship.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 had an acclaimed comedic crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks, but modern Star Trek crossovers essentially began in Star Trek: Discovery. In Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) were reintroduced to Star Trek canon and came aboard the USS Discovery. Pike was so well-received, Star Trek on Paramount+ launched a spinoff, which became the immensely successful Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Now that Discovery is ending with season 5, it could be Captain Burnham and her crew potentially popping up in other Star Trek shows.

Sonequa Martin-Green Confirms Star Trek: Discovery Crossover Hopes

Discovery’s actors are game to appear in other Star Trek series

EW interviewed Sonequa Martin-Green about Star Trek: Discovery season 5 at SCAD TVFest. On the subject of herself and her Star Trek: Discovery cast members crossing over with other Star Trek series, Martin-Green was enthusiastic and positive about the idea. Read her quote below:

We get the question about crossover opportunities all the time. I can speak for all of us, I think, when I say that we would all do it. It would be so much fun. It would be a great thing if we could cross over in whatever way. I don’t think anyone would say no.

Star Trek: Section 31 is purportedly a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery set after season 5 in the 32nd century, and this would be the logical place for a crossover. Discovery stalwarts like Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Captain Saru (Doug Jones), and Captain Burnham herself could easily meet the next class of Starfleet Cadets. Other crossovers with shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or even Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Section 31 movie would require time travel or other sci-fi plot devices, but could also potentially happen.

Martin-Green is at peace with Discovery ending.

It’s no secret that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 wasn’t planned as the final season, and all of the episodes had been filmed when the cast and crew learned Paramount+ canceled Star Trek: Discovery in March 2023. Sonequa Martin-Green described the “kaleidoscope of emotions” she felt about Discovery abruptly ending:

“My reaction when I heard Star Trek was ending — well, Star Trek: Discovery … man, it was a kaleidoscope of emotions. There was definitely the bittersweetness, but then there was this really powerful sense of peace as well, because of what we did, what we created, and what we were all able to be a part of. So, yeah, bitter and sweet, but peaceful at the same time… There is something quite culminating about the season… We went back and did a little addendum shoot to fully wrap it up.

Before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA writer’s strikes, Star Trek: Discovery‘s cast and crew were able to return to Toronto to film an epilogue that was added to Discovery’s series finale. Doug Jones said the extra scene(s) are “gorgeous” and give Star Trek: Discovery a sense of closure, but fingers are crossed that Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery’s heroes can still pop up elsewhere in Star Trek.
