Calls for the Canelo Alvarez– David Benavidez fight are intensifying with each passing day. Joining this demand now is Mike Tyson. In a recent interview, the former heavyweight champion saw the fight as a necessity, a striking contradiction from another opponent he had earlier envisioned for Benavidez.
On the 25th of November, Benavidez took his chances at securing a Canelo fight. How? He had to fight Demetrius Andrade at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. Well, Benavidez successfully stood the test and now awaits his Canelo fight to emerge on the horizon. Well, so does Mike Tyson.
In that significant moment, when David Benavidez sealed the deal against ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade, Mike Tyson stood ringside. He could see the future of the fighter whom he so fondly calls the ‘Mexican Monster’. He knew that after the Boo Boo victory, Benavidez deserved the fight that he vehemently had been chasing for four years. The big fish of the super-middleweight class- Canelo Alvarez. And so he voiced. In a conversation with Bryan Salmond, ‘Iron Mike’ noted, “Yeah, he has to. He’s been asking for it.”
When a fighter like Benavidez, who holds aspirations in his sleeves, enters the ring against the undisputed, Mike thinks, “It could be a great fight when it happens.” However, Canelo is not the opponent Benavidez had in mind until recently. It was, in fact, David Morrell who was in the running.
Iron Mike had envisioned a Morrell fight for the Mexican Monster
Previously, former heavyweight champ Tyson had suggested that a David Morrell fight would work great for Benavidez. He remarked, “I wanna see Benavidez fight David Morrell, the Cuban guy. He punches hard.” His comment came as a transgression to the majority who were seeking a Canelo fight for the Phoenix-origin fighter. Interestingly, Benavidez too has been eyeing Morrell who is the WBA (Regular) super middleweight champion. He noted, “If that [Canelo] fight doesn’t happen, I’ll fight David Morrell.”

Morrell Currently holds the WBA title and last defended it against the challenge of Yamaguchi Falcao. While a major sect of the boxing community believes that Benavidez will next fight Canelo next.
