WandaVision‘s MCU spinoff show Agatha: Darhold Diaries may acknowledge a pending Scarlet Witch tease that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made ambiguous. The MCU’s first Disney+ series, WandaVision, has left a lasting impact on the franchise. Scarlet Witch turned into a full-blown villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Monica Rambeau began using her powers to defend the cosmos in The Marvels, and two WandaVision characters have their own spinoff shows in the MCU’s current slate: Agatha Harkness in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Vision in Vision Quest. However, there are some plot elements from WandaVision that are still up in the air.
Wanda Maximoff embraced her Scarlet Witch persona in the WandaVision finale, where she used her power to defeat Agatha Harkness and undo her own curse on the town of Westview. Shortly after, Scarlet Witch became corrupted by the Darkhold’s obscure knowledge, which led her to face Doctor Strange and ultimately convinced her to sacrifice herself in order to avoid inflicting more pain on innocent lives. But while Scarlet Witch’s MCU journey seems to have reached an end, the MCU had promised much more for the hero-turned-villain. In her absence, the MCU’s upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries show may give Wanda Maximoff’s stories a new twist.
The Darkhold Scarlet Witch Prophecy Is Still Unfulfilled
During the WandaVision series finale, Agatha Harkness revealed to Wanda Maximoff the prophecy of the Scarlet Witch, stating that Wanda was destined to destroy the world. Despite Wanda’s heroic actions in the same episode, her villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness support the prophecy. However, Wanda once again realizes her wrongdoings in the very same movie, and this time she makes it impossible for herself to unleash more chaos. If she truly remains dead, then Agatha: Darkhold Diaries can explain the destroyed Darkhold’s unfulfilled prophecy one of two ways: either the prophecy was wrong or Scarlet Witch will eventually return.
“The Scarlet Witch is not born; she is forged. She has no coven or need for incantation. Her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. It is her destiny to destroy the world.”
It would be difficult for Agatha: Darkhold Diaries to ignore the Darkhold’s Scarlet Witch prophecy. Not only will Agatha Harkness break out from Wanda’s curse at the end of WandaVision, but she will also cross paths with a coven of witches, some of whom may know about the Darkhold and the Scarlet Witch. Together, the Agatha: Darkhold Diaries cast will likely expand the book’s MCU lore and reveal new information about the Scarlet Witch’s prophecy, confirming or denying the possibility of Scarlet Witch’s return along the way. Alternatively, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries could instead reveal that the Scarlet Witch could always be killed before she destroyed the world.
Agatha Harkness May Bring Back The Darkhold (In A Different Form)
WandaVision revealed that Scarlet Witch is the most powerful magic wielder in the MCU, and the Darkhold contained all the dark knowledge that allowed Wanda Maximoff to become such a powerful witch that she could massacre other universes effortlessly. Earth-838’s Doctor Strange also used the Darkhold to defeat Thanos, and it’s possible that the book provided characters from many other universes with unspeakable power. Given its power, it’s likely that the Darkhold’s knowledge survives thanks to witches, sorcerers, and other magical books that could appear in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. After all, the MCU has already brought back important elements like Mjolnir, the Infinity Stones, and the Iron Legion after they had apparently been lost for good.
