Mike Tyson, a name that rings a bell to every sports fan on the planet as well as to all his opponents who wished for it to ring any sooner. A professional Boxer who dominated the sport for two decades between the 1980s to mid-2000s was no stranger to violence and aggression. An Era that nicknamed him “Iron Mike” and the title of “Baddest Man on the Planet”. Today at the age of 57, Mike has grown towards kindness and inspiring millions with his wisdom and experience.
UFC commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan seemed to find out this the hard way about the past self of the legend when he invited Mike to his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience. Undoubtedly one of the most viewed and recognized programs on YouTube with guests of the likes of Elon Musk, Edward Snowden, and Robert Downey Jr. to name a few having discussions on various topics. Also in 2020, the Spotify deal was worth over 200 Million Dollars making it one of the most valued podcasts.
During his podcast with guest and standup comedian Dave Chappelle, Rogan amusingly recalled this incident. The UFC Commentator shared how it impacted his decision to go for a bigger desk for his studio. This he said had done to keep a distance from his guests post Tyson’s interview.
Joe shared “Mike Tyson is the reason why this desk is this width, I had a smaller desk that I was planning on using for my new studio, but then I did a podcast with Tyson“. A mixed martial artist himself he shared the difference he felt in the Boxer. This was in terms of both physically and mentally from his previous podcast with Iron Mike.
Further adding on the legend “he was jacked and had big a** muscles on his forearms and he made me so nervous like he was so keyed up, you could tell he was ready to go.” During the period “The Baddest Man on the Planet” was in preparation for his upcoming fight with Roy Jones. This led to his decision to not go for a smaller table mentioning “I need to have some distance” post on his interaction with Mike during the JRE#1532.
Mike Tyson calls out Joe Rogan during the podcast
The podcast began with its usual light-hearted moments and sharing a laugh with Mike. The viewers and Rogan witnessed a mood shift when Tyson shared his experience of training himself for an exhibition event. Rogan mistakenly took this as part of their ongoing banter. This didn’t go along with Tyson who was soon to point out the same.
Iron Mike was trying to explain the difficulties he faced getting back the mindset for the Roy Jones Jr fight. While they talked about the training video of Tyson for the same. Mike shared “Let me tell you something about that video, I did that video when I was in bed for a week, that was 30 seconds and I was in bed for a week.”
In response, the UFC commentator perceived it in a more humours way laughing on the same. This made Tyson feel disrespected he was seen having none of it. Promptly calling Joe out for his insensitive take on Mike’s experience.
The Boxer followed it by saying“It’s not funny cause it made me realize that this is serious.” Joe soon became more aware and took a step back before things could get heated.
As a result, the UFC Commentator became aware of the unpredictability of his guest. Later it was clear how Tyson wasn’t happy with Podcaster’s initial approach. Adding to the fact that he was in the midst of his next bout he embraced his fighter mentality. The podcast ended with Mike sharing his journey and path towards spirituality and a path to self-discovery.
